I'm doing songs I love, trying to work something out for myself.

"I'm just trying to slip into other skins. I'm doing songs I love, trying to work something out for myself. When I did The Way Young Lovers Do I was thinking of Van scatting. I just do them and try to forget them. They can be embarrassing. One reviewer hates what I did to that song. I just tried to bring myself to Van's style and stretch it."
Jeff Buckley

I can remember the first time I heard Jeff's cover of The Way Young Lovers Do. There's many different versions, and they're all different and good. But the first one I heard is my favorite. My dad put it on my ipod and I was falling asleep with it on shuffle and it came on, and I don't know if you know what I'm talking about, but I was in this weird state where I thought I was asleep but my mind was paying 1000% attention to the music and it just sounded so good! Like being high or something. I can't find that version right now and my ipod is long gone.
If I were introducing someone to Jeff Buckley it would be with this song. It really shows what a creative and beautiful vocalist he is.

I adore Etta James' cover of The Eagles song Take It To The Limit. I like the style of this even better than the original, and I just imagine what Jeff's version would sound like with just his guitar... shame.

i've always been wilfully out of step

I've always been wilfully out of step. I've always been on the outside. The only thing that came out and I liked immediately was Patti Smith. I got on to it right when it was happening. First time I saw her I was faking off from school for the 17th time and she was on the Mike Douglas show, just after the soaps on daytime TV - very mellow, very staid. Radio Ethiopia had just come out and there's Patti Smith with no shoes and just smacked. Dirty, black-soled feet and just from looking at the TV you could smell her. I know that tour look. She was like a wild animal.

You can reach a trance-like state where what's really going on inside the human psyche is being sung to

It's just about being alive, my songs. And about even emitting sound. It's about the voice carrying much more information than the words do. The fact is, there are so many other areas you can go with other instruments going on at the same time. You can reach a trance-like state where what's really going on inside the human psyche is being sung to... the music aims at what's really going on underneath... not what people pretend to be or what they hope they can buy at a store. The little scared kid or the full-on romantic lover is being accessed. There are really majestic qualities about people that can be reached through music. People are incredible to me even though I'm healthily cynical sometimes. It's because we are spirits and the whole tension is that we don't know that we are. Yet, music is able to touch this.

people have a certain perfection about them

one of my favorite pictures of jeff^
What is your idea of beauty?
It just is. Your smile. People have a certain perfection about them, no matter who they are. Like when Janis Joplin sang. Gorgeous!

My So-Called Life

"I loved Jordan Catalano so much, and talked about him so much, and thought about him so much, it was like he lived inside me. Like he had taken possession of my soul, or something. And then one day... I got over him!"- Angela

"We both stopped talking. Part of his sleeve was touching my arm. I don't know if he knew. Then everything started to seem perfect, for some reason. The feel of his shirt against my elbow. The fact that I still had an elbow. It was the perfect moment for him to kiss me...for him to anything me."- Angela

"You know how sometimes the last sentence you said, like, echoes in your brain? And it just keeps sounding stupider? And you have to say something else just to make it stop?" - Angela

"What I was thinking, as like a New Year's resolution, is to stop getting so caught up in my own thoughts, cause I'm way too introspective. I think...But what if not thinking turns me into this really shallow person? I'd better rethink this becoming-less-introspective thing...Okay, so I'll stay introspective. But I do resolve to stop doing Jordan Catalano's homework" -Angela

"Have you ever just, like, completely given up on someone, and then something happens, and you go, "Oh my God. There's so much more to this person than I ever dreamed!" -Angela

"Can you imagine what that's like? To have to sit around trying to figure out what someone else is, like, thinking?" -Jordan Catalano

Rickie : Okay, see the Egyptians, they wore eyeliner to...ward off the evil spirits. They believed that if they outlined their eyes, that the good spirits would spot 'em easier. I read it in a book. So that's why I tried it. The eyeliner, I mean.
Brian : So you believe in, like, evil spirits?
Rickie : Oh no, I, I'm Catholic. Basically, I just like how it looks.

"When you call someone's name, like, kind of loud, and they don't hear you, it makes you feel really lonely." - Angela

If you've never seen, or at least heard of My So-Called Life, I feel very very sorry for you poor unfortunate soul. I honestly think it was one of the best 90's shows... yet it was very short lived. These pictures can only show so much. You have to watch it to get all the magic. There are many great quotes also.
