just get to work

The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and somthing else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.

val kilmer//the doors

val kilmer playing jim morrison in oliver stones the doors, 1991. filmed in LA, paris, and NYC

Val Kilmer had to convince Oliver Stone for the part, he made his own 8 min. tape of him acting as Jim. He evenrecorded songs and asked Stone to pick out which was Jim and which was Val and Oliver Stone couldn't tell! He performs 15 songs in the movie.
To prepare he lost weight, went to Doors tribute concerts, read Jim's poetry, hung out around Sunset Strip, rehearsed Doors songs for 6 months, and wore Morrison like clothes for almost a year. he also spent alot of time talking to Paul Rothchild who was The Doors producer, he told Kilmer, "anecdotes, stories, tragic moments, humorous moments, how Jim thought, what were my interpretation of Jim's lyrics and helped withsome pronunciations, idiomatic things that Jim would do that made the song sound like Jim".

The real remaing Doors; Robby Krieger and John Densmore talked to him but Ray Manzarek refused...
Oliver Stone originally wanted Paula Abdul to choreograph the concert scenes... but she didn't "understand" Morrison's onstage actions (hahhah)

matt dillon//drugstore cowboy

matt dillon in drugstore cowboy.
1989, directed by gus van sant. filmed in portland, oregon. based on the autobiography by james fogle. also stars heather graham

"Well, to begin with, nobody, and I mean nobody, can talk a junkie out of using. You can talk to 'em for years but sooner or later they're gonna get ahold of something. Maybe it's not dope. Maybe it's booze, maybe it's glue, maybe it's gasoline. Maybe it's a gunshot to the head. But something. Something to relieve the pressures of their everyday life, like having to tie their shoes."

"Alright everybody just act cool. Just like we got back from church."

"Most people don't know how they're gonna feel from one moment to the next. But a dope fiend has a pretty good idea. All you gotta do is look at the labels on the little bottles."

"Never look at the backside of a mirror, because you're looking at your inner self and you don't recognize it, because you've never seen it before."

i was going to make this all in one post as "movie crushes" but instead ill do a series... you'll notice a trend haha.
